Fairfield Halls…

Fairfield Halls – 50 years of jazz

Fairfield Halls Croydon has enjoyed much success over the years – as well as many historical classical and pop/rock concerts, the big names in jazz have also performed there.

Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Count Basie, Dizzy Gillespie, Sarah Vaughan, Woody Herman, Stan Kenton and Buddy Rich all appeared through the decades.

To remember these and other jazz names appearing at Fairfield Halls since 1962, the BBC Big Band will be appearing on 26 October in “A Swinging Celebration”, a special concert to be recorded for Radio 2’s Big Band Special.

In addition, immediately following the concert, there will be a free jazz event in the Foyer Performance area, to be recorded for Radio 3’s Jazz Line-Up. Introduced by Julian Joseph, Alan Barnes and his group will play live, plus there will be recorded music and interviews – all reflecting jazz at Fairfield over the past 50 years.

If anyone has personal recollections of any of the major jazz events at Fairfield, please email bbcbigband@aol.com

Full details of both events will be announced shortly

Pasadena Roof Orchestra Jubilee Special

The Pasadena Roof Orchestra returns to Croydon on Saturday 23 June as part of the Croydon Summer Festival 2012 – Jubilee Special and the PRO’s own 40th Anniversary.

Other artistes on the bill include Art Themen and Trevor Tomkins, plus the Trinity School Big Band.

SWING THAT MUSIC! For forty years the Pasadena Roof Orchestra, based in the UK, has delighted audiences all over the world with its mix of swing and hot dance music. Swing is much more than a musical genre, it personifies a lust for life, with its infectious beat. Its roots lie in the pre war dance bands, and the roaring twenties which inspired the later big swing bands. In contrast to many other musical genres swing has never really gone out of fashion over the decades, particularly in recent years. The Pasadena Roof Orchestra has played an important role in this resurgence of popularity.
